The Rosh Hashanah simanim, and what you say over each one

Every year someone asks "wait, what do we say over the beets?" Here's the list in one common order. Clone it, open it next to the plate, and let the kids read.

Dates (tamar): "May our enemies and those who hate us be consumed"

Black-eyed peas or fenugreek (rubia): "May our merits increase"

Leek (karti): "May our enemies be cut off"

Beets or beet greens (silka): "May our adversaries be removed"

Gourd or pumpkin (kara): "May the harsh decree be torn up, and may our merits be read before You"

Pomegranate: "May our merits be as many as the seeds of a pomegranate"

Apple in honey: "May You renew for us a good and sweet year"

Fish head (or a sheep's head): "May we be a head and not a tail"

Fish: "May we be fruitful and multiply like fish"

Carrots (Ashkenazi custom, from the Yiddish "mern", to increase): "May our merits increase"

Before all of that: kiddush, washing hands, and the round challah dipped in honey
